Retirement

Mr W Dean, of Stainton Villas, Denaby Main, who for the past 10 years has been under manager of the Barnsley Seam at Denaby Colliery, retired from that post in December 31 last.

He has been in high esteem by the management and by many who knew him personally. Mr Dean first came into contact with the local collieries at the time of the Cadeby Colliery explosion in July 1912. He came over with a rescue party to assist in the work remain to work at the colliery in the extrication of the unfortunate victims of the fatality.

He continued in that capacity from the July to September and then returned to Wath Main Colliery. He returned to the Cadeby colliery in an official capacity at Christmas 1912.

In 1927 he was transferred to Maltby Colliery to be assistant under manager to Mr Ross and there he remained until March 1932, when he came back to the district as under manager in the Barnsley Seam.

He is succeeded at the colliery by Mr Leonard Moss, who has been his assistant for a few years. Mr Moss is only a young man, was made good progress and speaks highly of the training he has received whilst serving under Mr Dean.

Mr and Mrs Dean will shortly be going to live at Conisbrough, having arranged an exchange of houses with Mr Moss.
