Road Men at Dinner.

Enjoyable Evening at Conisboro’.

Nothing whatever marred the success which attended the 2nd annual subscription dinner of the roadmen from the parishes of Conisborough, Denaby, Edlington. and Braithwell.

The dinner was inaugurated in 1909 by Mr. W. I. Gibbs, of Denaby Main, but this year Mr. W. A. Lugar, landlord of the Fox Inn, kindly consented to arrange the affair. A capital menu was capably taken charge, of by Mr. and Mrs. Lugar. Amongst those present were Councillor H. L. Smethurst, (Chairman of the Parish Council), the Mayor or Rotherham (Coup. Dan Mullins), Mr. W. W. Norwood, Mr. and Mrs. W. I. Gibbs, Capt. Jones, Mr. Henry Baker, Mr. T. R. Booth Mr. R. J. Clarkson, Mr. th W. Laughton, Mr Charles Farrell, Con. W Appleyard, Coun. Moody, Mr. John Hawksworth, Mr.Dobbs (Mexboro”), Mr. Joyner, Mr. Steven Baines, and Mr. Lapledge.

After dinner the toasts were proposed, and responded to. Council Smethurst (chairman) proposed the loyal toast of ” The King.”

M r. Gibbs next proposed the toast of “The Queen, Prince of Wales, and all the Royal Family,” which was responded to by Mr Lugar.

Councillor Appleyard proposed “The differential Defensive Forces of the Empire.” He said that they ought to feel proud that they owned the supreme defensive forces of the world. He said the army was very small, but, nevertheless the men conducted themselves in a creditable manner. He said they had now Territorials, and he hoped they would do their duty when necessary.

Mr Johnson responded said they had a strong Army and Navy, and he hoped everyone would do the duty to the country.
