Roman Catholic Bishop At Denaby

The people of St. Alban’s Roman Catholic Church received a visit from their bishop, Dr. Cowgill (Bishop of Leeds) on Sunday.

The bishop was received at the entrance of the church by the clergy and escorted to the Sanctuary in procession while the choir sang “Ecce Sacerdos.” Mass was sung by Father Lehane. The choir sang ‘Genitor Cunctipotens Deus” (from a 12th century Gregorian Mass). The proper of the mass was sung to traditional Cumbrosian melodies. At the offertory the motet ”Veni Cleatus Spiritus” was sung. In his address Dr. Cowgill gave an account of his first visit to His Holiness the Pope.  He also reported that during the last five years 35 churches had been built in his own diocese. They had been built by the contributions of the people, and it was a very fine effort.

A procession to the Roman Catholic cemetery was made in the afternoon and the Bishiop blessed the graves of the faithful departed.

Over 400 candidates were presented for confirmation at that evening service.  They came from Conisboro’, Denaby and Mexboro ’and were presented by Father Holohan, parish priest.  After giving instruction to the candidates, the Bishop warmly complimented the choir on their singing.  Mr. R. Dunn was the organist.
