Roman Catholic Procession

The May festival in connection with the Roman Catholic Church of St. Alban’s, Denaby, was held on Sunday evening. The weather was fortunately finer whilst the short procession was in progress.  There was not the full ceremonial of previous years, and many people arrived too late to witness the event.

The procession was from the school to the entrance of the Welfare Institute and back to church.  The procession did not enter the football field, and the May Queen crowned the statue in church.  The dress, as usual, was very pretty and won the admiration of the onlookers.

The May Queen, Agnes Clark, looked very pretty in her gown and train and with her retinue of attendants. Mary Kelly was the crown bearer and the small train-bearers were K. Madin K. Fallon, N. Prendergast and N. Higgins.  The procession was led by cross0bearer and altar boys. Then came the Infant King (John Dolly) and Infant Queen (Sarah Atkins) and all the younger scholars.  After these came the various Queens and their retinues: Queen of Violets, Annie Davis; Queen of Lilies, Kathleen Mannion; Queen of Roses, Emma Humphries; Queen of Erin, Mary Higgins; St. Alban, Tom Kelly; Joan of Arc, Mary Yellowly. Then came the May Queen and her court, followed by last year’s May Queen (Margaret Blythe).

The rear of the procession was formed by the “Children of Mary,” some of whom carried the statue which was later crowned by the May Queen.  Father Holohan and Father Hunt brought up the rear. The banners carried were “The Infant Child,” “St. Alban,” “Jesus-Maria,” “St. Patrick,” and “Mother of God.”

As they returned to church the Children of Mary sang hymns.
