Protest

More than 1100 parliamentary electors in Denaby, Conisborough and Mexborough, sent postcards and protests last week to Mr Tom Williams, MP. For Don Valley.

These 1100 people were all Roman Catholics, and their postcards, which were dispatched from Denaby to the House of Commons, read as fellows:

“As a voter in your constituency I most strongly protest against the passing into law of the new education Bill, for the following reasons:

  1. The proposed granting of rights of entry into voluntary schools for the purpose of Cowper-Temple teaching and the refusing of the same right of entry into provided schools for the purpose of denominational teaching; and
  2. The proposed taking away from managers of voluntarily schools the right to appoint teachers given them in the act of 1902. Even though temporarily assistance be giving them towards providing schools for senior children. I request therefore amendments which will rectify these injustices.”

22 parishioners were engaged in disturbing the postcards to their fellow Catholics.
