Romance at Factory
Conisbro’ Girl (16) Will Marry Colleague, Aged 37

Work at a local crisp factory meant romance for 16-years-old Connie Blakemore, of 6 Daylands Avenue, Conisbrough, for in less than two months, one of Connie’s workmates, John William Clarke, aged 37, took time off from feeding potatoes into a slicer to ask: “Will you marry me?”

To-morrow (Saturday), Connie, second of the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Blakemore, will marry Mr. Clarke, also of Daylands Avenue, at Don Valley Register Office.

“The difference in age doesn’t mean a thing,” said Mr. Clarke, whose romance blossomed despite the fact that he works at one end of the crisp making process and Connie at the other.

“Living in the same street, I have seen her grow up into a nice girl. It was because I knew her mother that I met Connie on friendly terms,” he added.

Connie told our reporter, “I have known John since I was very young, but we first got together when he came to work at the crisp factory two months ago. We shall live at my mother’s house until we can save enough for a home of our own,” she added.

Her mother, Mrs. Ruth Blakemore (41), said: “I have liked John from the start. You could not meet a nicer, more gentle man. He will be a perfect husband for Connie.”

Miss Blakemore has worked at the factory for about seven months, and previously worked at mills at Snipe and Doncaster.

Her husband-to-be has formerly worked as a builders’ labourer.

After the wedding and a small reception, the couple will spend a honeymoon at Blackpool.
