Private W.E.Rosser
Conisbrough Clerk in France

Here is a photograph of private WE Rosser (R.A. M.C.) who enlisted in that corps on 1 November, and after five weeks training at Aldershot went out as typist on the lines of communication. He is at present at general headquarters in France. He was formerly a clerk on the staff of the Denaby and Cadeby Main collieries Ltd.

He is the son of Mr R.J.Rosser, of Sunnyside, Conisbrough, who was recently received the following interesting letter from him:

“it is Christmas Day, and I’m spending it as I’ve never spent it before. I think it is the first Christmas I have spent away from home.. I’vehad a nice present today from Princess Mary; a box with her head engraved upon it, and the names of all the allied countries on the box too. Inside were pipe, packet of tobacco, cigarettes, her photo and a Christmas card.

I also received a parcel from the Queen, containing socks, gloves, etc, and a photo from the King and Queen, with Christmas greetings on the back and a nice inscription, wishingus all a safe return. I am sending them home for you to take care of.

Such gifts as these make you feel more patriotic than ever. In fact, it makes one’s heart go out to them.

We have a piano here and we are going to have a concert tonight. It will be like old times for me. You don’t know what a pleasure a piano affords, after being without one for such a long time. We have just had a visit from the Prince of Wales, who was brought round by the Col. We felt quite proud.

I have not had time to answer all kind letters received from friends, but will do so if I get the chance. I am quite all right, and in good health.
