Sheffield Independent – Monday 04 September 1899

Hatchard Cup.

Roundell Street 3 Denaby Main 3

At Staniforth road, Attercliffe. Owing to the late arrival of the visitors, the game was not commenced till seventy minutes after the advertised time.

Being the first match of the season, by the consent of the visitors, Mr. W. Wright, contractor, of Attercliffe, kicked off.

The early portion of the game was very interesting, and some very fine play was witnessed. The visitors wing men then raced away, and, after a bit of smart passing, succeeded in opening the score after 15 minutes’ play, Riley, the home custodian, not having the slightest chance to save. The home team, however, soon equalised from a clinking shot by Dennis. Both teams now went at it for all they were worth, and Denaby succeeded in adding another to their score.

Half-time : —Denaby Main, 2 goals; Roundell street, 1 goal.

On the resumption’ of hostilities, the home team went off with a dash and, from a fine run by Batty and Rhodes, the latter succeeded in equalising. The team still continued to press, and obtained several corners in succession, from one of which J. Wilson got possession, and, with a fast low shot, gave the home team the lead.

The excitement now became intense, and the play was none too gentle. The ball travelled from end to end in rapid succession. Towards the finish the visitors made a dash into the home quarters, and for some time the conflict waged hotly round the home fortress and ultimately, from a sharp scrimmage, Denaby managed to equalise.

The whistle sounded immediately afterwards with the score: —

Denaby Main 3 Goals Roundell Street 3 Goals.
