A Serious Omission
Run Rider’s Forgetfulness Causes Tubs to Run Away
Arthur Jones, a run rider, of Denaby, was also charged with a breach of colliery rules at the Cadeby pit, on date of his offence being Jan. 27th.
This was, said Mr. Gichard, an act likely to endanger the lives of persons working in the mine, and was a breach of special rule 1. The defendant had charge of the tubs, which are full when sent in one direction, and empty ones in another.
There were several important things which he had to see to, amongst these being the examination of the ropes, and a “stop block” put between the tubs. Another item which should come under his notice was the putting in order of the “jack catch.” The precaution was to guard against the tubs running away.
The chain which should keep the rope taut had been neglected by the defendant, with the result that the tubs ran away about 200 yards, smashing several things before eventually stopped.
Ordered to pay 20s. inclusive.
