Sad Case of Attempted Suicide at Conisborough

At the Doncaster West Riding Police Court on Monday, before Mr. Yarborough and several other justices. Hannah Ward, described as a domestic servant, of no fixed place of abode, was charged with having attempted to commit suicide at Conisborough.

It appeared that about half past two o’clock on Sunday afternoon the prisoner walk into what is known as the Mill Down at Conisbrough. She was immersed up to the neck, and then she turned back and walked out again.

Police-constable Truman saw her standing with her clothes dripping with water, and he accused her of having attempted to commit suicide. She replied that she had nowhere to go to. She had been in a situation that a milliner’s at Mexborough, but was discharged on Thursday last. Her parents formerly lived at Denaby Main ; they left two months ago, and she did not know where they had gone to. She was locked up.

Superintendent Blake asked for the case to be remanded, and this was accordingly done.
