Denaby Lose Kennedy
Transferred to Nelson
The followers of Denaby United will miss a very familiar and popular figure on Saturday and subsequently, on Wednesday, when the United played their away match with Castleford, representatives of Nelson, the Second Division club, watched the game.
They were impressed by the play of Sam Kennedy, and on Wednesday night were in Denaby with the object of securing his signature. The Denaby club were, naturally, very reluctant to part with a player who has risen to great form this season, and has been one of the mainstays of the side. But they were just as reluctant to stand in the way of Kennedy´s progress, and the player was anxious to take advantage of getting into a higher class of football. So the transfer was arranged straight away, and Kennedy will play at Nelson on Saturday, against South Shields in a Second Division League fixture.
The fee paid was £250, which is rather a low one, and, a indicated, it was only Kennedy´s anxiety that persuaded the Denaby management to accept it.
Kennedy was in his third season with Denaby, coming from Burnley, where he had been playing for a short while with the reserve team, and he also spent a month or two with Wombwell but did not give that club any indications of his real ability.
He did much better with Denaby, but has never played so well as he has done this season. He has developed into a fine centre-half, a powerful spoiler, and a judicious feeder. He is also an accurate and powerful shot. He has so many friends at Denaby that the doings of the Nelson club will be of new interest locally.
The vacant place in the Denaby team on Saturday will be taken by Illingworth, the big lad from Prospect United, who has been playing with the reserve team, but who has not yet had much scope for the development of the talent he appears to possess. He made his first appearance with the Midland League side on Wednesday, when he played a very good game at Castleford, and he will have a further chance on Saturday, when he turns out against Lincoln City Reserve. With Hill in hospital, owing to injuries received in the pit, Charlie Taylor will also be called on.
