Sam Peck Has Eye For Promising Player

Fifty-three-year-old Mr. Sam Peck, genial president of Denaby United and the club’s chief roving ‘talent scout’ over the past few seasons, once again deserves a hearty pat on the back.

Supporters and fellow office alike have much to thank this loyal clubman for. For the second successive year, he has ‘discovered’ entirely on his own initiative, a player who has proved an invaluable addition to the Midland League side. Mr. Peck, President for the past eight years, spends much of his time ‘scouring’ the district for promising young players, often missing home matches in the process. Incidentally, he is quite used to travelling, Mr. Peck is a commercial traveller for a Conisbrough firm

Last season Mr. Peck was responsible for signing Brian Smith. The ex-Cortonwood player, with his quick-silver moves and precision passes, did much to help Denaby drag themselves from the depths of the table at the latter end of the season.

This season it was Sam who signed left-back Frank Foster of Arksey, near Doncaster. Frank (20), who does the work of two men in the defence is already under the watchful eye of ‘scouts’ from several well-known League clubs.

Mr. Peck of Drakehead Lane, Conisbrough, is confident there is much more talent to be found in local sides. “I get out as much as I can; you never known when you can spot a likely player,” he said this week.
