Scarboro to Conisbro’ Trip Took 16 Years

Six months a word. That is roughly how a postcard has worked out that was received last week by 82-years-old Mr. George Lewis, of Low Road, Conisbrough.

The card was slipped into a post-box at Scarborough on August 14th–16 years ago. It shows a picture of Peasholm Glen, was signed “Bertha” and was addressed to Miss Sarah E. Addy, care of Mr. Lewis. It was some time before an intrigued Mr. Lewis could remember that Sarah was his niece, who died in 1935, and who had been staying with her uncle when the unknown “Bertha” had “just dropped a line.”

“Having a good time,” said the card, and time has been a factor in this communication. There were two postmarks on the card, the second from Sheffield, and dated October 23rd, 1950. Next thing for Mr. Lewis to do now is for him to write to Sarah’s parents at Huddersfield, and try to contact “Bertha.”
