Scholarship

Mr. John Edward Baker, of 24 Pope Avenue, Conanby, 21 years old ventilation officer at Denaby Main Colliery, has been awarded a National Coal Board scholarship to Leeds University in October. He will study there for a degree of B.Sc. (Mining) and if he obtains it, he will stay on with the N.C.B. for at least another three years.

Mr. Baker, who is the only mineworker in No. 3 Area of the North Eastern Division to win a scholarship this term, began work at Denaby three years ago as a haulage hand. He went to the colliery after leaving grammar school in Norwich, his home town.
