School Attendance Offences

John Willoughby, miner, Denaby, was summoned for a breach of the education act not sending his daughter, Ajay, regularly to school. She had lately attended 27 times out of a possible 86, and she had attended 134 out of a possible 345.

The mother brought the child before the court, and it was evident that she was nearly blind. She said the doctor had advised her not to send the child to school.

The Attendance Officer said no Doctor certificate had been shown.

The case was adjourned for the certificate to be brought.

James Fisher, miner, Denaby, was summoned for a similar offence. His daughter Mary, aged nine, had attended four times out of 86 and 180 out of 345. Her mother kept her at home to look after the children.

Fined five shillings including costs.

John Oates, miner, Denaby, whose child and attended 215 times was also fined five shillings and costs.
