Sent for Trial

When a Conisbrough man was accused at Rotherham Borough Court on Friday of two safe robberies, the police alleged that he had made a voluntary statement which took nearly three hours to write down, and in which he was alleged to have described how he helped two other men to carry out the robberies, one from a sub-post office at Rotherham and the other from a house in Eckington, Derbyshire.

Harry James (33), crane driver, of 34 Harthill Road, Conisbrough, was sent for trial at Rotherham Quarter Sessions accused of breaking into Thornhill sub-post office on December 7th or 8th, 1957, and stealing £75 cash, savings certificates, Premium Bonds, postal orders and stamps to a total value of £539 12s. 11d.

He was also accused of breaking into a house at Eckington on December 28th, 1957, and stealing a safe containing about £1,000 and some deeds belonging to Colin Metcalf, a turf accountant.

He was also charged with stealing a pair of binoculars from a car in Rotherham last April.

His application for bail and legal aid were both rejected.
