Serious Assault at Conisbro

Frank Bell pawnbrokers’s assistant, Mexborough, at the Doncaster West Riding Police Court, on Saturday, summoned Gordon Bell and Harrv Maugham, jun.,  pony drivers of New Conisborough. for an assault, which Mr. Blackmore the prosecuting solicitor, described as brutal and unprovoked.

The evidence was to the effect that on the 23th ult. the complainant was walking, with a ladyfriend near Conisborough station, and was overtaken by the two defendants, who took up a position either side of him and asked him for a match. He suspected them, and said he hadn’t one.

They accompanied him for a few paces, and then the defendant Bell called out “right, ” and Maugham knocked the complainant down with blow the chin. They kicked him while he was the ground and attempted to take his chain, which was securely fastened.

Mangham, who had been previously convicted, was fined 20s and costs, and Gordon Bell 10s. and costs, or 21 days.
