Shaft Sinking

I am told that £200,000 was expended in the sinking of the shaft at Cadeby ere the mineral was reached – there had need be a bit of profit afterwards!

The average weekly wages to the miners at Denaby Main amount in round figures to £3000.

Rather afraid the bulk of this goes to Mexborough instead of Conisborough. The wives of the pit men as well as the men, can nowadays get to the former place, conveniently by bus – and if any of them are unfortunate enough to become “top-heavy” in the town they can be bundle into the vehicles and driven back home; thus not being, so easy a prey to the police.
