Sharp Practice at Denaby.

On Monday, at the West Riding Court, Doncaster, Cain Adams, hawker, was brought up on a charge of obtaining 4s 8d by trick from Hannah Coleridge, of New Denaby, but the charge was altered to stealing 3s 2d.

Complainant said that on Saturday night the prisoner came to her back door, and offered a piece of the oil-cloth for sale. He asked 8s for it, and said it was 5 yard long. Eventually she gave him 4s: 8d for it, and then found that it only measured 2 ½ yards, and was worth 6d, a yard.

She went after prisoner, and asked him to rectify the matter, but he refused.

Prisoner pleaded guilty, and was fined 40s, including costs. The 4s. 8d. To be returned.
