“Sheer Wanton Damage” at Denaby

Broken windows and a shattered goldfish bowl at a Denaby school were “an obvious case of sheer wanton damage,” Chief superintendent L. D. Lewery told Doncaster West Riding Magistrates on Tuesday.

Before the court was Harold Hall (17) haulage hand, of Balby Street, Denaby, who pleaded guilty to being concerned with three juveniles in attempting to steal goods and chattels belonging  to Denaby Youth Club on May 2nd and committing damage to glass and a bowl, the property of the West Riding County Council.

Fining him a total of £8 the Chairman (Mr. F. S. Newborn) told him, “If you haven’t any more sense we’ll try and teach you some.”

Chief Superintendent Lewery said the Youth Club held their meetings at Balby Street School, where on May 2nd, the caretaker found two window panes and a fanlight broken.

In the playground a broken goldfish bowl was lying. It had previously been inside the school building.

In all, £3/10/- worth of damage had been done.

Hall was alleged to have told the police that they had intended getting into the school for some “chocolates and pop” but when they found they could not get in they had thrown stones at the windows. Hall was said to have been the eldest to have been involved.
