Shop-Breaking

Two Denaby miners, Charles Henry Willows and William Davies, were charged at Doncaster on Monday with breaking into a lock-up shop at Denaby and stealing cigarettes and tobacco to the value of £2 9s. 6d., the property of Harry Smith, confectioner, of Doncaster Road, Denaby.

P.C. Woffenden said that at 3.45 a.m. last Saturday he noticed that some boards had been pulled away from the back of Smith’s shop. He knocked up Smith, and they inspected the premises.

Witness made inquiries, and arrested the two prisoners. When charged, they said, “That’s right.” Willows, who had been convicted in 1930 for breaking into a shed and fined £5, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, and Davies was fined £3.
