Silver Jubilee of His Ordinaton
Parish Joins Denaby Priest in Celebrations
Over 300 packed Denaby St. Alban’s Catholic Club on Tuesday night during celebrations to mark the Silver jubilee in the priesthood of the Parish Priest of St. Alban’s, Fr. A. G. 10’Kane. Curate at Denaby, Fr. D. J. O’Keefe, presented Fr. O’Kane with a cheque for £585 from his parishioners.
Fr. O’ Kane also received an illuminated scroll commemorating his service from the parishioners, and a spiritual book from the Legion of Mary. Last week he was presented with £100 on behalf of the children, and other sections of the church have given private gifts.
Fr. O’Kane, who has served at St. Alban’s for over nine years, was ordained at Ushaw College, County Durham, on April 22nd., 1935. He previously studied at St. Cairn’s Col:ege, County Kilkenny.
He was curate at St. Joseph’s, Bradworth, and at Skipton, and Moorthorpe. Prior to coming to Denaby Fr. O’Kane was Parish priest at Silsden, Ilkley.
High Mass
Fr. O’Kane was celebrant at High Mass on Tuesday morning, the deacon was the Rev. Peter Hurley and sub-deacon Fr. Martin McGagh, a native of Denaby and a missionary in Nigeria. The Right Rev. Mgr. E Malone, Vicar-General of the Diocese, gave the sermon.
Fr. O’Kane entertained the clergy to lunch. Other visitors included Fr. W. Butler, of Leeds. and Fr. T. White, of Sheffield.
The evening concert in the Catholic Club, included items by the Children of Mary, and the menfolk of the parish, who presented a sketch—”The Old Geezer.
The concert was followed by a social and refreshments in St. Alban’s School.
