Private Simpkins, son of Mr and Mrs W.V.Simpkins, Wood View, Denaby Main, was killed in action on April 9.

In a message conveying the sympathy of the officers and men of the company, it was stated that he was “fighting gallantly” when he met his death.

He was 19 years of age and before enlistment was employed at the Kilnhurst steelworks.

He joined the R.A.F.as a cadet, but was unable to pass the severe medical test, and transferred to the Machine Gun Corps.
