United Didn’t Take Chances.
Skegness 5 Denaby United 0
Another early lapse by Denaby United in their Midland League game with Skegness didn’t give them much chance of pulling back lost ground, although for the best part of the game they were a match – and sometimes more – for Skegness.
The first setback came in the third minute, when Lily, a powerful attacking halfback hit the ball towards the Denaby penalty area. It was too high for Bailey to reach, then bounced between Jones’s legs for Purvis to run onto and shoot. Staslukiewicz pushed the ball out again, only for full-back Foster, attempting to hook it away for the goalmouth, to put it into his own net.
Despite the bad luck, Denaby stuck into their task, and the forwards began to move more as a single unit than they have done for a while. Holland, making his return to the right wing after a couple of seasons away, was the greatest Denaby danger to Skegness and time and again his centres brought confusion to the home defence.
On the other wing, Roebuck initiated a 10th minute move which almost brought an equaliser. His pass to Wood was pushed up to Gray, who ran onto the ball and hit a shot inches over the bar.
But 6 min later Skegness went further ahead and within a minute of the restart scored their third goal.
Skegness made sure of their first win of the season with goals in the 67 and 72nd minute.
But that was how the ball ran, Skegness got the rebound and took their chances. If only Denaby had someone to turn their chances into goals.
Team: Staslukiewicz 6; Whant 5, Foster 5; Bailey 6, Jones 5, Ainscough 5; Holland 7, Wood 6, Gray 6, Harvey 6, Roebuck 6.
