A Smart Pawnbroker’s Assistant

At Doncaster West Riding Court yesterday, before Mr. W. J. Huntriss and Mr. J. W. Hodgson, John Colefax, pony driver, Denaby, was charged with stealing a watch, the property of Charles Eland James, dataller, New Conisborough.

Complainant stated that on the 6th inst. he went to work in the pit, and hung his vest in the workings. During the morning he went to work in another part, and on returning missed his watch. Prisoner was working in the same road, but had no right to take the watch.

Herbert Craven Taylor, manager for Mr. Wray, pawnbroker, Denaby, proved that on Monday prisoner wanted to pawn the watch with him, but he detained it and gave information to the police, and Police-constable Lund apprehended the prisoner the same night.

In reply to the charge prisoner said, “It’s true, I stole it.” He was committed to prison for 14 days. On the application of Supt. Blake, the magistrates decided to reward the pawnbroker’s assistant to the extent of 10s. for giving information to the police.
