Conisbrough Ambulanceman helps to remove
body of Prince Maurice of Battenberg

Frank Smith, of Willow Dene, Conisbrough, is attached to the fourth Field ambulance of the Royal Army medical Corps. He was one of the first ambulancemen to go on active service from this district. Writing to his mother, he says:

“I suppose you will have heard of Harry been wounded. He has had a terrible time during the war. A little things I was so near them, yet I could not see him.

Ask  him if he remembers Prince Maurice of Battenberg been wounded and dying. It was our ambulance that brought in from the trench. His Highness was in command of the Kings Royal rifles. We had 140 men captured after the retreat from Mons. We have had 2 hospitals blown up. I am getting quite used to having to run it. I took part in the great battle on the Aisne.

We have been highly praised by the officers because we often go into the firing line to fetch the wounded.
