Smoking Concert for Mr. Wm. Cox

For the benefit of Mr. Wm. Cox a grand smoking concert was held at the Station Hotel, Conisboro’, last Saturday evening.

Mr. Cox was up to just over three years ago employed as a miner at the Cadeby pit, but met with an accident, which seems to have seriously affected him internally, and, despite surgical operations, the unfortunate man has never been able to work since, and relies for locomotion on the assistance of a bath-chair.

Previous to his unfortunate accident he was a strong and big specimen of humanity, and took an active part in local affairs generally. During his prostration Mr. Cox has had many trials in domestic life, and when last year he lost a faithful partner through death, his cup of misfortune was filled to the brim. It is improbable that he will ever again be able to earn his own bread.

His fellow-miners were only doing their duty in supporting the movement, which, I am glad to say, was a success. The concert was arranged by the Cadeby Colliery officials, who bore all costs, whilst several local amateur vocalists gave their services, and also did Mr. E. Trout, and the Brothers Dawson, of Mexboro’, brass instrumentalists.

Mr. Cox desires me to thank all those who assisted in making the affair a success.
