Soldier – Dolly, John – Killed In Action. (picture)

October 1943

South Yorkshire Times – Saturday 23 October 1943

Killed In Action.

Mrs. Dolly, of 9, William Street, Denaby Main, received news last week-end that her son, Pte. John Dolly (21), had been killed in action in the Mediterranean area.

Pte. Dolly volunteered three years ago and went out to the Middle East in March of this month. He was a likeable youth and had many friends in the area.

Sympathy is felt for Mrs. Dolly, because her husband, too, is serving abroad, and the day she received the news of John’s death she had also received a letter from her husband saying that they had not yet met, but that he had received a letter from John in which he said he was “quite well,” and they hoped to meet in the near future.

Before enlistment, Pte. John Dolly was engaged for a time at Denaby Colliery.

His father, Sergt. John Dolly, was employed at the works of Messrs, Bateson at Conisbrough. They were both staunch members of St Alban’s Church.
