Welcome Home
Flags were flying in Doncaster Road last weekend to welcome home L/Sergt. Sam Jackson, eldest son of Mrs. Jackson, 102, Doncaster Road, Denaby Main, after nearly 6½ years abroad. Sergt. Jackson left England in October 1937.
He has seen service in Alexandria and Palestine and joined the Eighth Army for the North African campaign in which he served throughout. He was wounded in the shoulder at Sidi Barrani by shrapnel in 1940 and after convalescence in Cairo re-joined his regiment.
Three pals he left behind were Guardsmen F. V. Hirst and J. Hunt, of Mexborough and L/Cpl. J. Vickers of Swinton, and he promised to send their good wishes to all at home and their friends in the district. He also met a Denaby man in Tunisia, J. Ball of Barnburgh, whom he did not know although he lived so near his home.
Two days before the end of the Tunisian campaign he was wounded in the jaw. He has now a 28 days furlough and says it is grand to be home again and see all the family and friends once more.
His younger brother, Albert, who had just left school when he went abroad is now a Petty Officer (Artificer) in the Royal Navy. He is at present on the sea.
The family hope to have a family gathering soon to celebrate his return and hope that Albert will be home to join them. Sergt. Jackson has been through the campaign with his pal Sergt. Stacey, of Mexborough, to whom reference was made in our last issue.
