Sapper Leslie Roberts, Royal Engineers, has been killed in action on March 22.

He served an apprenticeship with Messes Kay’s grocers, Doncaster, joining the Home Guard in October 1940.

He joined the army early in 1942 and did very well at the Draft Training depot, winning the Competition Drill Medal for the smartest in the class of some 300, and because of the was appointed Lance Corporal.

He crossed to France soon after D-Day and there has been published an official photograph showing him examining a German Bazooka captured at Caumont.

He was on leave in January. He is the eighth former member of the Conisbrough Home Guard killed in action.

His father served in the last war.
