Soldiers’ Tribute to Comrade

Mr. and Mrs. C. Rouse, of 13, Ravenfield Street, Denaby Main, have now received further news about the death from wounds of their son, Transport Driver Sidney Rouse, of the R.A.S.C.

Sergeant Burt writes from Burma – “On behalf of the boys I am writing to say how much we sympathise with you in the loss of your son Sid, as he was known by all of us.  We had all been together from the time that we left home, and there was never a dull moment in his company.  His cheerful conversation would create a laugh when things looked bad for us.  He was buried at Barrackpore, India, with full military honours.  We all know there is a pal gone from us who can never be replaced.  To you he was a son, to us a pal, and in soldier’s language no greater tribute can be paid to anyone.”

The matron of the hospital to which he was conveyed has also sent a letter in which she states that every care and medical attention was given to him, and she was personally in attendance, but his condition was so serious he did not survive an operation.  He had received shrapnel wounds in the neck. She expressed the sympathy of the staff with them in their sad loss.

Driver Rouse was 23 and had been in the Army for about three years and had served in the Burma theatre of war for about 2 ½  years.  He was a member of the Parish Church and served as a choirboy there for quite a time. His elder brother, Pte. Douglas Rouse, whose wife resides at 117 Tickhill Street, Denaby Main, is serving in Italy.
