Decorated by “Monty”
Denaby Corporal’s Gallantry
Cpl. T. Waters, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Waters, of 80, Cliff View, Denaby Main, according to the B.B.C. European News, has been decorated on the field by General Montgomery for bravery and a splendid example to comrades which he set on D-Day.
Cpl. Waters is attached to the signal section of the Sixth Airborne Division of the Parachute Brigade. He was engaged in fixing communication wires on D-Day and sometime later found there was no communication and that the wire had been cut. He repaired the wire with great difficulty and it was cut again and again. This happened seven times and at last Cpl. Waters decided to wait and watch the wire. He hid near a bush and saw a German soldier crawling along to cut the communications. He fired, killed the enemy and saved the communications.
For this brave act he was awarded the Military Medal. Cpl. Waters is 29 and before enlistment was employed underground on the haulage at Cadeby Colliery. He has been in the army nine years and has seen 7 ½ years’ service in Burma with two years jungle service. He came home in 1943 and after a furlough joined the paratroops. Mr. Waters, (father of Cpl. Waters), served in the last war under General Montgomery then Lieut. Montgomery in the Warwickshire regiment.
