Soldier – Whitehead S. – In Akbar (picture)

August 1934

South Yorkshire Times – Friday 31 August 1934

Private S. Whitehead, stationed at Akbar Barracks, Agra, India, with the 2nd Battalion, K.O.Y.L.I., and  his friend, Lee-Cpl. Adamson, whose home is at Tickhill Square, Denaby, enjoying the “Times.” Pte. Whitehead also comes from a well-known Denaby family who have lived for thirty years in Barnburgh Street.

“This is what Pte. Whitehead writes: “For over twelve years I have read your paper each week without fail, and here in India I have eagerly awaited its arrival weekly for six years. It is also welcomed by my home town colleagues out here. Your paper is undoubtedly, in my estimation, the best twopenny-worth on the market, as it contains information on many subjects. It is indeed the paper for all and sundry. Lee-Cpl. Adamson, who is on my right in the photo, has taken the ‘Times’ for quite a number of years. He plays cricket for our battalion and drives the car of his commanding officer. I am keen on boxing and cricket mostly and have won several cups. I took part in the campaign on the N.W. Province, in 1930, and was awarded the General Service Medal. I am due for home about Christmas.”
