Fortunate Escape

Trooper G. W. Wilkinson (29), of 62, East View, Mexborough, had a fortunate escape when the tank he was driving was hit by a shell and burst into flames in France on July 8th.  He sustained minor injuries, two broken fingers and the effect of blast in his chest.  Some members of the crew suffered from burns and others were uninjured.  Trooper Wilkinson spent a period in Nottingham City Hospital and at a convalescent camp.  He is now sufficiently recovered to rejoin his unit.

Going over with the initial landing forces, Trooper Wilkinson landed in France on D-Day plus one.  Youngest son of Mr. A. and the late Mrs. Wilkinson, 59, Kirby Place, Mexborough, he has served 15 months, being formerly employed at the British Westfalite factory at Denaby.  He is married and has a baby daughter.
