Serving Family

Mrs. Barnes, of 68 Highfields Road, Conisbrough, is proud to have her three sons, a son-in-law, and two nephews serving with the Forces, while her three daughters are working on munitions.

At the outbreak of war Arthur Barnes (30), left Conisbrough Brickworks and volunteered, joining the Coldstream Guards in 1939. He is now with the 8th Army.

Also in the Middle East is Driver W, Barnes (23), who also worked at Conisbrough Brickworks and also played with the works football team. He has been with the R.E. for three years.

The third son serving with the Forces is L/Cpl. Les Barnes (20), who is in England. As a junior footballer with Conisbrough Brickworks F.C. he missed a chance of playing with Wolverhampton Wanderers through being called up.

Mrs. Barnes’s son-in-law is Driver Ben Lay of the R.A., who is in North Africa and has been in the Army for three years. His home is at Bradford, and he worked on the L.M.S.

Her two nephews are Herbert Faulkner, R.A., who is in North Africa, and whose home is in Edlington Street, Denaby Main, and L.A/c. Cyril Hone, RAF. of Balby, Doncaster.

Guardsman Arthur Barnes, who has been all over the world, recently wrote home to his mother and said he and his pal (who hails from Wath) were leaving the Y.M.C.A. somewhere in North Africa, when a voice said “Arthur,” on looking round he got the biggest surprise of his life on seeing his brother, Driver Bill Barnes, whom he had not seen for many months.
