Soldiers Parade
Last Monday afternoon a recruiting route parade had been arranged by the newly formed regiment known as the Doncaster Engineers, for the purpose of gaining recruits to bring the strength of the regiment, which on Monday they reached over 800, to the total requirement – 1000.
The soldiers were time to leave Doncaster at 2. 30 p.m. They did not reach Conisborough until nearly 4. 30.
The intention was to hold recruitment meetings at Warmsworth, Conisborough, Denaby, and Mexborough. Mr F Ogley, C. C, had been invited to preside at the Conisborough and Denaby recruiting meetings.
The meeting at Conisborough had to be abandoned, as the time appointed was unsuitable. The men were halted and drawn up on the low road opposite the Coronation Park, and facing the castle, where refreshments were served.
