Soldiers – Saxton Family – Long List (pictures)

Mrs J Saxton, of Lewes road, Conisbrough, was herself doing their bit as an area warden, is proud to have a son, son-in-law, and six nephews in the forces while her youngest daughter as served in the A.T.S..

Her son Guardsman J Saxton is in the Coldstream Guards, and appears to enjoy the life. He was a keen local junior football. He was formerly employed at Cadeby May Colliery.

Guardsman T.Grace, also of the Coldstream Guards, whose wife is Mrs Saxton’s eldest daughter, resides in coronation Terrors, Conisbrough.

Sgt R.B.Jones, son of Mr D. Jones and the late Mrs Jones, 27, Lewes road, Conisbrough, one of their nephews, is meeting with success in the Fleet Air Arm. He won a scholarship to Mexborough, is Secondary School, where at the age of 15, he won a scholarship for the R.A.F.. He recently celebrated his 21st birthday abroad and was promoted to sergeant.

Another relative in the Coldstream Guards is Guardsman J.W.Saxton, and with his younger brother, private Harry Saxton, both being sons of Mrs Lockwood and the late Mr J.W Saxton, of Chapel Lane, Conisbrough, is in England.

Guardsman J.W.Saxton formerly worked at Baker’s, while private H Saxton, who is serving in the Army was employed at Cadeby colliery.

Lance Cpl Leonard Saxton of the Seaforth highlanders and private Bernard Saxton (black Watch), sons of Mr and Mrs Hardy Saxton, 12, March Street, Conisbrough. Both have had some narrow escapes during their military career.

Lance Cpl Saxton enlisted with the Black Watch before being transferred to the Seaforth’s. He served in France and Belgium, took part in the evacuation from Dunkirk. Back in England he trained as a parachutist, but was turned down on account of his age.

Private Bernard Saxton, worked at the Yorkshire May Colliery, as served with Black Watch abroad, and was among those evacuated from Crete. He joined before the war.

Somewhere overseas is Thomas Jones, son of Mrs Simpson and the late Mr T Jones, of 37 Elm Green Lane, Conisbrough.

A/C2 W Roberts, son of Mrs and the late Mr John Roberts, West Street, Conisbrough, is serving with the RAF in England.
