January

9 – Announced that Mr. Frank Doxey, manager of Grimethorpe Colliery had been appointed agent of Hickleton Main Colliery.

30 – Miss J. E. MacLeod appointed to succeed on April 21st. Miss J. E. Crowther as senior mistress of Mexborough Secondary School.

February

8 – Body found at the rear of the Reform Club, Goldthorpe, of Gladys Merricks (16), daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. Merricks, of 38, Briton Street, Thurnscoe.  Intensive hunt for murderer.

27 – Ald. William Dobbie, M.P. for Rotherham, completed ten years’ service as Parliamentary representative.

March

1 – Mr. H. Hutchison commenced duties as secretary of Kilnhurst Co-operative Society, succeeding the first Secretary, Mr. Donald Royston.

5 – Presentation by Governors of Mexborough Secondary School to Mr. J. L. Hawksworth, of Bolton, their chairman from 1927-1942.

27 – Four men fatally injured by steam tank bursting at Cadeby Colliery.

April

4 – Mr. Herbert Morrison (Home Secretary) addressed a meeting at Moorthorpe.

5 – Coun. P. S.  Geldard “father” of Rotherham Rural Council, congratulated at Rotherham Rural Council on having served 21 years as councillor.

10 – Announced that Mr. W. Martin, of Park Road, Barnsley, had been elected without a poll as President of Barnsley British Co-operative Society.

May

4 – Cudworth Land Army girl, Miss Violet Wakefield (20) died after being found suffering from severe head injuries on Barnsley fair ground.  Trevor Elvin (21), of 24, Grove Street, Barnsley, was later hanged after being found guilty of murdering the girl.

12 – South Yorkshire bus companies’s employees on strike.

17 – Darfield Modern School formally opened by the Rt. Hon. R. A. Butler, M. P., President of the Board of Education.

June

21 – Charity cricket match at Mexborough between teams led by Mr. Herbert Sutcliffe and Mr. P. Beaumont raised £750 for Montagu Hospital.

July

5 – Charity cricket match at Swinton between teams sponsored by Mr. G. C. Vaughan and Mr. Colin Ward. J. P

Death of Mr. G. W. Mitchell (69), of Doncaster, prominent South Yorkshire industrialist.

20 – Record year’s examination results announced at Mexborough Secondary School Speech Day.

26 – Mr. A.W. Youngs began duties as new Secretary-Superintendent of Mexborough Montagu Hospital.

August

2 – Over £500 raised for Swinton War Welfare Fund by Garden Party opened by Countess Fitzwilliam.

27 – Presentation to Mr. L. R. Honeywill, secretary and director of Manvers Main Collieries Co. Ltd., on leaving to take up an appointment with the Butterley Co. Ltd.

September

18 – Swinton win Yorkshire Council Championship for first time, defeating Hickleton Main in final.

October

4 – Covenant Scheme to realise £1,400 for Mexborough Town Nursing Association handed over to Association officials by the organising sub-committee.

10 – Coal Sunday celebrations at several South Yorkshire pits.

27 – John Pickering (17), of 38, Daylands Avenue, Conisbrough, charged with the wilful murder of his father.  Pickering was later found not guilty and discharged.

November

1 – Mr. D. P. McKenzie succeeded Mr. F. E. Hall (retired) as clerk to Mexborough U.D.C.

25 – Red Cross Rally in Mexborough opened by Maud. Countess Fitzwilliam raised £942.

December

18 – First annual prize distribution to nurses attending Mexborough Montagu Hospital Training School.
