South Yorkshire Revival

A full quota of South Yorkshire talent was on the soccer stage last weekend.

Ken Willingham, Shiregreen, captain of Huddersfield Town, passed on to Wembley with his happy heroes – including Boot, former Denaby United left halfback. Both were at wing half against defeated Sunderland for whom Burbanks, another Denaby United man who got a cup medal last year, scored their solitary reply to Huddersfield’s three goals.

At Luton, Westlake, former Thurnscoe Victoria full-back, made a highly successful first appearance for Sheffield Wednesday. A contemporary summing up of the drawn game said he was “little, if any, inferior to Catlin – playing like an old hand”.

Massarella, a former Denaby wing forward, continues to serve up good football for Wednesday

Wilcox, former Denaby full back who made his first appearance in Derby County’s league side a fortnight ago against Charlton, was retained with highly satisfactory’ results against Leeds United.

“This Derby defence had a most promising youngster” was a contemporary’s comment

Jack Barker, also one time Denaby player, also played a dominating part in Derby’s surprise defeat of Leeds.

Thawley old Wath National schoolboy, was among Bristol City’s goal scorers against Queen’s Park Rangers

Arnold Bramham who continues to serve up the goods at Millmoor, got Rotherham’s only goal on Saturday. He is a former Brampton Ellis Schoolboy.

Smith, former Denaby United back and latterly centre forward, scored Gateshead’s only goal against Chester.
