Spooner’s Quick Win
Local Lads At Chesterfield
Local followers of the promising career of Tommy Spooner, the hard hitting Denaby lad would share his disappointment at the defection of Jim Crofton, the selfstyled Lincolnshire middle-weight champion with whom he was matched in the open air programme promoted at Chesterfield on Monday. As the Lincoln man did not put in an appearance Harold Cox, a local favourite, deputised and though he did not last very long, he enabled the local lad to show that he has come on a good deal while he was in the ring.
Cox did well in the first two rounds but stopped one of Spooner’s smashing punches in the third round and sustained a cut eye, his seconds throwing in the towel.
Hughie Sharples, another Denaby lad also figured on the same bill and his fight with Ginger McWard (Sutton) was the best of the day. The Denaby boxer had the physical advantages but McWard was a skilful and crafty opponent and was hard to hit. Sharples used his left well but never connected with any real damaging punches and though there was very little to choose between the men McWard was awarded the verdict on points.
