Spreading Hospitals

The Fullerton Hospital at Denaby which is to be enlarged this year at an estimated cost of £4,000, has now been ministering to that district for twenty years, and has done wonderful service. It was provided purely as an accident hospital, and like the larger institution at Mexborough, has gradually extended its scope and character.

Both at Mexborough and at Denaby a strong incentive has been given by the Sheffield hospitals’ new subscription scheme to make increased provision in the locality for medical and surgical cases which formerly went as a matter of course to Sheffield.

The Denaby Hospital will be able this year to treble its accommodation, and the two hospitals together will be able to maintain nearly 150 beds for the ailing and injured of the district.

We all hope that this provision will be ample for the normal requirements of the district. If not, the process of extension must go on. There ought to be no waiting lists. That a stitch in time saves nine is almost literally true of hospital treatment.

There is an element of rivalry between these two hospitals, but while it is rivalry in service and not competition for funds, we can regard it with appreciation.
