Sunday Boxing

When the question of Sunday boxing was sprung upon the Consiborough Councillors through ‘correspondence’ at the last Council meeting, it was wisely decided to delegate the discussion to the appropriate committee.

It now appears as though there may be no need for discussion as Sunday boxing appears to be contrary to law. That is what is stated in letters which the Councillors have received from the Lord’s Day Observance Society, which say: ‘It is reported in the Press that your Council has under consideration an application for the hire of the Baths Hall, Denaby, on every available Sunday during the winter. May I respectfully call your attention to the pronouncement on May 21st of this year of Mr. J. P. Blake, Chairman of the Entertainments Committee of the London County Council, on the matter of Sunday boxing in halls under the control of the L.C.C. and which applies to all local government authorities.

Replying to a question in the Council he stated that: ‘The Council had been advised that exhibitions of that character were unlawful, and the Home Secretary had expressed the opinion that enforcement of the law was the duty of the Council. In view of this we would appeal to you as a member of the Consiborough Urban District Council, to use your influence against permitting such a breach of the law as Sunday boxing undoubtedly is.’
