Swinton 142 Conisboro’ 39
Swinton Run Away With Conisboro’
It was sincerely hoped at Swinton, after their poor display against Denaby, that Swinton would be successful in their match against Conisboro’, and those who pinned their faith on the home team were amply rewarded, for Swinton gave a capital exhibition, and won handsomely by over 100 runs. Saturday being an ideal day for the summer pastime, a large number was attracted to witness the game.
Conisboro’ have made many alterations in their team, and this year I notice that two of the Robinsons are included, who should prove a capital addition. A number of young players have been introduced, but there will have to be considerable improvement in all departments before they can dare to hope to win matches.
Their display on Saturday was a sorry one, although their fielding was at times very clean, quite a number of chances were missed, Freddy Nesbitt letting off Fred Gomersall twice. “Mat” Harrison, the pro., did exceedingly well, and was responsible for seven wickets for 33 runs.
The home team batted first, and Fred Turner and Harry Rigby opened the innings. It was soon apparent that Turner was in a merry mood, for he hit up 39 before he was caught out, giving a very fine and popular exhibition. Shaw played steadily for his 18, whilst “Nance” Taylor had a life included in his 10 runs.
Fred Gomersall was exceptionally lucky, and he ought to have been out three or four times. He made 31, but his exhibition was anything but brilliant. Foss was only in a few minutes for his 16, which included one six, a four, and a three, and the innings closed for 142.
Conisboro’ commenced upon their nearly impossible task about five o’clock, but they were quickly scattered, all of them being out for 39 runs, mainly through the efforts of Turner, who took five wickets for 15 runs. Penny was responsible for two at a cost of 19 runs, while Harrison took three wickets for two runs.
Walter Robinson was the highest scorer with 12 to his credit, while “Mat” Harrison and T. Hoyle each made six. The batting of the visitors was disappointing, and Swinton gave a very much improved display.

At Swinton, before a fairly good gate.
The home team won the toss, and thanks to free hitting by F. Turner and F. Gomersall, the side put together 142 before being disposed of. Shaw, Foss, and Taylor also batted well, and none of the team failed to score.
For the visitors, Mat Harrison was the most successful bowler, claiming seven wickets for 53 runs, while Marsbro took three for 25.
The visitors entirely failed to respond to the home team’s lead. Turner and J. Harrison bowled very destructively, and had the batsmen always in difficulties.
The venture terminated for 39, Swinton winning for 103 runs.
The Swinton professional’s analysis was five wickets for 15, Harrison claiming three wickets for three, while Penny got two for 19.
