Sheffield Independent – Tuesday, 4 November 1879
Monday.—Before G. W. Chambers, Esq. (Chairman), H. Jubb, and H. Otter, Esqrs.
Taking A Pipe Into The Denaby Main Colliery.
James O’Donald, living at Denaby, was fined 10s. and costs, or ten days’ imprisonment, for taking a tobacco pipe into the Denaby Main Colliery.
Mr. F. P. Rhodes prosecuted, and said that the defendant was a filler. In consequence of there having been an outburst of gas at the Denaby Main Colliery, Mr. John Warburton, the manager, gave instructions for the men’s clothes to be searched. On October 21st, a deputy examined the defendant’s clothes, and found a tobacco pipe in one of his pockets.
Another Careless Collier.
William Green, of Mexborough, was fined 20s. and costs for taking matches into the Denaby Main Colliery.
Mr. Rhodes prosecuted.
On October 24th the defendant’s clothes were searched under instructions from the manager, and the matches were found in one of his pockets. When his attention was called to the matter, the defendant said that he had forgotten to take the matches out of his pocket before he descended the mine.
The Bench considered it a serious case.
