The Big Drum

The ownership of the Denaby Main Hotel, known to many a Collier in many a coalfield as the “Big Drum,” has changed hands during the last few days.

And the property has been sold by the Denaby and Cadeby collieries, Ltd, to Messrs. Duncan Gilmour and co., Ltd, the Sheffield brewers.

This hotel, which was erected in 1893*, is one of the largest of its kind in the country, and is, indeed, almost a village in itself, so complete and self-contained is its accommodation.

Since it was built, the neighbourhood has been honeycombed with workmen’s clubs, but it is still today one of the busiest hotels in South Yorkshire, and one of the best conducted.

  • Note that from other articles on this site that the Denaby Main Hotel was actually erected in 1895
