The Denaby Rumour

A very persistent and circumstantial rumour went around the district on Tuesday with regard to the Denaby and Cadeby Colliery’s. it was reported that the directors have posted notices inviting the men to return to work on the old terms, which would be guaranteed for five years. the rumour, on the face of it, was improbable, and we quickly ascertained that there was no truth in it. The Denaby and Cadeby Colliery Ltd are members of the South Yorkshire Coal Trade Association, and we understand that the South Yorkshire mine owners in general are agreed that the settlement, when it comes, shall not be piecemeal, but should apply to the whole district.

There is no intention here of adopting the tactics employed in the Mansfield area, or of attempting to detach men from the alliance of the union pit by pit. On the whole, we are glad to hear this, for, although everybody ardently desires a settlement, no one wants to see the district involved in turmoil that has accompanied the Notts breakaway.
