The Denaby Unemployed
Sir,—There are now near upon 100 of the old hands that have not yet got employment. A number of these are aged persons, and who will find it difficult to obtain employment; but there are some young and able-bodied amongst them, and who ought to make an effort to get work. Eighteen months is a long time to depend upon public charity, and the charity of their fellow-miners of the district.
But, sir, if reports are true, some have obtained work elsewhere, and because it has not been so lucrative as they would like, have left it, and fall upon the “nipsey” fund again (if ever they throw off). The Central Committee, prior to paying them last week’s “nipsey,” told them that the young and able-bodied would cease to be assisted after the close of the year.
This may seem somewhat hard; but no doubt the Central Committee are acting upon instructions received. They have received a very large amount from various sources during the late strike, and which has materially assisted the distress which has existed amongst the women and children. I hope they will take the hint given, so that the aged will be assisted till they can find employment.
Yours truly,
A Miner.
