The Late Denaby Strike and Debts
There was a large number of judgement summonses dealt with, and many of the persons came from Denaby Main. Some of the room is stated that the debts have been contracted owing to the late strike, and that they had not been paid in consequence of their husbands not working. They said that a number of the men were still unemployed.
It will explain by the Judge that in one case the woman only owed 1 shilling.(5p)
The woman said she appeared all but 6d. (2 ½ p)
The Judge: But the costs come to 2/3. (11 ¼ p)
His Honour subsequently intimated that he would not allow the costs.
It was stated that the wages of the men concerned range from five shillings to 7 shillings per diem.
A Denaby Miner and his Creditors
Dennis Higgins applied for an administration order. It was stated that the debts amounted £37.
The debtor offered 15 shillings in the £ at the rate of 10 shillings per month. He said he had been off work and suffered with his eyesight. He was expecting to resume work in a fortnight.
His wages were £1 7s per week, and he had two children.
