Mexborough and Swinton Times October 8, 1897
The New Vicar of Conisborough.
We are authorised to state that the Rev W.A. Strawbridge, M.A., Vicar of Masbrough, Rotherham has signified to His Grace, the Archbishop of York, his acceptance of the living of Conisborough, rendered vacant to the removal of the Rev H Stock, to Pocklington.
Mr Strawbridge’s work in Masbrough has presented many difficulties, owing to the extent of the parish, and its dense population. Within the last two years district of Northfield has been detached and falls into a separate ecclesiastical area.
He was appointed the vicarage in December 1884 and during the 13 years which have since lapsed much useful work has been done, not only in connection with the church and schools, but also in other directions.
Mr Strawbridge was a member of the management Burial Board. At the present time he is the Chapter Clerk of the Rotherham Rural Deanery, and a governor of the York Diocean association.
His first curacy was at Doncaster 1879 – 83 and in the interval between the latter year and his preferment to Masbrough he had charge of St Stephen’s, Southwark. Mr Strawbridge was educated at the Bromsgrove Grammar School. Obtain a scholarship he went to Worcester College, Oxford. He graduated B.A.in 1878, and M.A.in 1881, with honours in classics.
The new Vicar is a democratic churchmen of moderate views. The value of the management living is stated to be £268 and that of Conisborough £250. Much regret is expressing Rotherham at the removal.
