The Pitch And Toss Nuisance, At Denaby.
Thos. Mitchell, Charles Rear, John Henry Freeman, William Cowley, William Bracey, John Briggs, Francis Stokes, John Martin, James Griffiths, and Edward Childs, all of Denaby, had been summoned by P.C. Midgley, for playing at pitch and toss, on Saturday, the 8th inst.
Thomas Mitchell, Charles Rear, John Henry Freeman, William Cowley, and Edward Childs did not appear. The men who appeared pleaded guilty.
P.C. Midgley said that a little after four o’clock, on the afternoon of the day in question, he received information that a number of men were running on the highway, between Denaby and Denaby village. He concealed himself in a wood, from where he saw the defendants. They were running for a wager, and after the race was over, they commenced playing at pitch and toss. He distinctly saw coins thrown up into the air.
Mr. Cadman (one of the magistrates) said that they were determined to put down gaming on the highway, and each of the defendants would be fined 2s. 6d. and 8s. 6d. costs.
